We all know the Thanksgiving Holiday is coming up fast. Prices of basic necessities and groceries have skyrocketed around the country since the beginning of the pandemic. Many families do not have the discretionary income to cover the additional costs of a special holiday meal. As such, we are collecting donations to provide holiday food packages to local families in need. We have partnered with the DC Housing Authority, Office of Residence Services. The DCHA has designated families that are most in need in four different housing developments: King Greenleaf Apartments, James Creek Apartments, Sypax Gardens, and Greenleaf Extension all of which are in our footprint of SouthWest were we have our Annual Community Day.

  • With a mission to serve the DC community, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated joined forces to provide free resources for families in The Nations Capital. Area Director Thomas Davis joined us along with Vice President of Programming Toni M. Harper to share the importance of community and where you can get in on the fun this weekend. [Video is from ABC7-WJLA and photos are compliments of friends and partners of Omicron Eta Lambda Chapter]

    Mission Impossible...

On Saturday November 9, 2013, the brothers of Omicron Eta Lambda chapter welcomed six new brothers from the line “Mission Impossible,” into the House of Alpha. The new brothers shepherded by Chapter Dean Brother Ryle Bell are Brothers Joseph Thompson, Sherard Cooley, Earl Johnson Jr., Damiyan Sherman, Sahr Bockai Jr.,and Justin Holliman.

This new cohort of brothers was admitted through the IMDP process and was a part of a conglomerate cluster of Areas 4, 5 and 6 which convened in Baltimore, Maryland at the Delta Lambda chapter house. Thirty seven candidates from chapters in Delaware, The Eastern Shore of Maryland, Baltimore, Columbia Maryland and Washington, DC were initiated from the cluster.

Many thanks go out to several chapter brothers who supported the process, particularly, Brothers Davis, Spears, Huntley, Foushee, Nolen, Drayton, Armstrong and Pierce who made the weekly drive to Baltimore and were present for most of if not all of the sessions.

The new brothers were accorded a chapter orientation program on Wednesday December 13, 2013 at the Howard University College of Dentistry where several brothers discussed brotherhood, chapter operations, Alpha protocol and programs. The new brothers have all volunteered for and have been assigned chapter committees in which to function and are off to a good start in terms of chapter involvement.

In spite of the chaotic and haphazard inception of the program, the brothers of Omicron Eta Lambda chapter along with Chapter Dean Ryle Bell have prepared and presented a strong cadre of men to do the work of Alpha through the Omicron Eta Lambda chapter. There is still much research to be conducted regarding our community to address the health disparities that we are combating. The following study is a step among many to determine how the Black community can create a healthier and more knowledgeable understanding about the diseases that affect us.

Devlon N. Jackson, a Howard University, PhD Candidate, is conducting a study to determine the discussions that Black men are having with their primary health care providers about PSA testing - a blood test that is used to screen for prostate cancer. If you are a:

    •           40 years-of-age or older

    •           Visited your health care provider in the past 12 months and

    •           Live in the DMV area (District of Columbia, Maryland, or Virginia),

…we want to hear from you by completing a brief, anonymous questionnaire. You can access and complete this 5-7 minute questionnaire by clicking the link below or copying and pasting the link into your web browser: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/HU_PSATest
