1. During the beginning of the school year, reading books that are already in the classes can be suitable. However, after October or November, the students have read most of the books in their classrooms. To the extent possible, brothers should check out books from a public library or borrow books from family and friends for reading.
2. Read the books before you go to the class to familiarize yourself with the stories, information, and words.
3. Subjects that tend to capture their attention, especially the first time you read to a particular class, include most Dr. Seuss books and factual or fictional books about dinosaurs, reptiles, and carnivores. During the school year, teachers will sometimes request we read certain types of books because the class is focusing on a specific subject (e.g., planets, how an item is made, conduct/manners, fables, etc.)
4. The first time you read to a class, introduce yourself, let them know you are a member of the fraternity and chapter, mention that you are there to encourage them to enjoy reading, and highlight the importance or reading. All of this can be done in about one minute.
5. Depending on the length of the book and the children's attention span, you can ask them questions as you read through the book or wait until you finish reading.
6. Sessions usually last 20 to 30 minutes.
7. When you go to the school, report to the office. If I haven't given you the name of the teacher you should see, then the office will probably have a name for you.
8. If you need to contact the school to let someone know you can't be there, are running late, would like to reschedule, or need directions, the office telephone telephone number is (202) 576-6156. You can usually ask for Ms. Smith, who works in the administrative office.
9. The school is located on Sheridan Street, Northwest, between 4th and 5th Streets (across the street from Coolidge High School).
10. The Principal is Dr. Nicole Clifton (an AKA) and the Assistant Principal is Mr. Samuel Johnson (Sigma).
11. After you've read, let me know about your experience.
12. Enjoy!
