Message from the President

  • President Eric A. Smith II

Welcome Brothers of Alpha, Community Partners, and Friends:

I extend greetings with honor and humility on behalf of the 618th House of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.—the Omicron Eta Lambda Chapter—where we continue the noble charge of advancing manly deeds, scholarship, and love for all mankind throughout the District of Columbia and beyond.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of our chapter’s chartering—a milestone that reminds us not only of how far we have come, but how much further we are called to go. In 1985, eighteen visionary Brothers answered the call to establish a chapter rooted in action, advocacy, and brotherhood here in the nation’s capital. We are the beneficiaries of their faith, courage, and commitment—and even now, we recommit ourselves to honoring that legacy through meaningful service and strong leadership.

As we enter this new fraternal year, we do so with clarity of purpose and unity of vision. The needs of our communities are urgent. The weight of our responsibility as Alpha men is real. But our resolve is greater. Our Brotherhood is stronger. And our impact must be deeper.

This year, our work is guided by the belief that “It’s Our T.I.M.E.

    • Transparency – Honest, accountable, and inclusive leadership at every level.
    • Innovation – Forward-thinking tools and methods to enhance how we serve.
    • Membership – Intentional engagement that brings out the best in every Brother.
    • Energy – Relentless commitment to our purpose, programs, and partnerships.

We believe Alpha is not just something we joined—it is something we live. As Jewel Henry Arthur Callis once said,

“Alpha Phi Alpha was not organized in a day. It evolved out of a need—a felt need.”

That felt need remains today—for brotherhood, for justice, for service—and we are the answer.

    We’re also reminded in 1 Peter 4:10:

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”

As Alpha men, our gifts—our vision, our voice, our values—must always be in service to others.

In that spirit, we remain committed to advancing Alpha’s National Programs:

    • Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College
    • A Voteless People is a Hopeless People
    • Project Alpha
    • My Brother’s Keeper

We are expanding our impact through longstanding and new partnerships—with organizations such as Friends of Southwest, the Hip Hop Caucus, DC Board of Elections, DC NPHC, Food & Friends, the March of Dimes, and others. We are also reimagining how we serve our brothers and our communities through modernized operations, intentional mentorship, and meaningful civic engagement.

If you are a Brother of Alpha Phi Alpha in the Washington Metropolitan area looking for a chapter that is active, accountable, and advancing—you are welcome here. If you are a community leader or organization in search of a partner for progress—let’s connect. And if you are a friend of Alpha, we invite you to learn more and walk alongside us as we serve.

    Together, let’s rise with purpose.

Together, let’s build on our legacy.

Because after 40 years, It’s still Our T.I.M.E.

    Fraternally,

    Bro. Eric A. Smith II

    President, 2025-2026
